Investment or scam?

So there I was, on my nth visit to the history department for the last three months. Peeking outside their door to see if Mr. Maniquiz, was there. He was my previous History 10.1 teacher last school year 2011-2012, second semester. I would go only to see him in his very busy state and by busy state. I mean busy facebooking, to be more specific, he is busy playing Farmville. Sure, enough I could say that he has spent a lot of time in his Farmville basing from the looks of it.

Now, some of you may wonder why I have been continuously visiting the department, well it’s because many months have already passed and I still haven’t received my grade from him. The space provided in the blank for my was simply blank, no letter grade, and no INC. Now, it has become worse, the status of my History 10.1 has turned to yellow and yellow means in progress. Heck, it even turned into a cycle. Step 1, go into the history department and complain about me not receiving my grade. Step 2, he would stop facebooking and ‘listen’ on what I have to say. Step 3, he would tell me that he has already sent my grade to the registrar and assure me that I’ll receive my grade. Step 4, I would thank him for his ‘help’ and leave the department. Last, step 5, wait for a week, check the SLMIS to see if my grade is there, and repeat all over again from step 1. Well, yes, I believe in him. I believe that he has already sent my grade to the registrar and let them leave the posting of my grade in the SLMIS.

The SLMIS or the Student Lifecycle Management Information System was supposed to make our lives easier. One way is that we could see our grades in the internet, which makes it easier for most of us students, since our generation has been more familiar with today’s machines.

The main purpose of the SLMIS was to make the lives in our school much easier. Like, enrolling, looking up exam schedules, receiving grades, etc. But, from what I have been seeing and experiencing these past few months. I’m sad to say that the SLMIS has really not done its full purpose these days. For instance, the season of enrollment in our school means that the school would be filled with a lot of students and by that I really meant a lot. Then, the SLMIS came and everyone thought that enrollment would not be as hassle as it has been before. When I enrolled as a second year student, there was already the SLMIS; I had guessed that the school would not be crowded. Well, I guessed wrong, the school was still crowded with students and everything was still as hassle as it has been before. But, don’t get me wrong, the SLMIS did its part though. The grades that can be seen online surely made our lives easier. Students with internet access in their homes from faraway places would not travel anymore just to see their grades. So, what went wrong with mine? Why can’t I still see my History 10.1 grade in the SLMIS?

According to one of the articles in The Crusader Publication it has been mentioned that “The University allegedly paying Php47 million to the Pakistanis for the system. Though Ms. Fernandez was hesitant to disclose the true amount.” Well, I wonder why Ms. Fernandez was hesitant to reveal the true amount of the payment. By the way, Ms. Harriet Fernandez is the head of the SLMIS. A lot of questions have been running into my mind lately. Why is it that the SLMIS is not making our lives easier yet? Why is that we still can’t enroll on our own in the SLMIS? And why is it that I still can’t see my grade in the SLMIS?! Is it really that hard to tell the people on why the SLMIS is not working on its full capacity?

It has been 5 months now since I’ve been pestering the history department, my grade aren’t still posted in the SLMIS, and I still can knock some more. We, the students, who have paid a huge amount of money simply just wants to be inform on why the SLMIS is not working the way we thought that it would be. Please don’t make us think that the money we have given to University could be an investment or it could be a scam.

Trinnah (Final)

A 20-year-old lady who knew what it’s like to struggle to attain her dreams and at the same time be a victim of poverty.

When she was young, her mother was a plain housewife and her father was a traveler. He sold ceramic jars during festivals in almost all parts of the Philippines; she then told me through an online interview that, “As exciting as his job may seem, [but] his income isn’t exciting at all.”

She had one brother. They both grew up knowing the value of money, if they wanted something, they had to work hard to get it, because their family’s money was barely enough for their basic needs. They never really got the chance to enjoy most of the bright side of life during their childhood years, because they were too busy fighting poverty every day.

They both witnessed their parent’s hard work and the struggles they have to endure. Witnessed how their parents had to borrow money from their relatives knowing that their parents would receive negative feedbacks from them.

After witnessing all of the hardships and struggles their parents had to endure for them to have a bright future. Both of them then had a realization that they had to do more in their studies and to never let their parents experience such a thing again. She then said that “I could say that we were a little more mature than the common kids of our age back then, maybe because we needed to and we had no other choice.”

In high school, basic necessities were still at the top of their family’s priority list.  She even said that “I used to be that boyish wear-whatever-I-want-because-I-don’t-care type in school. Not that I don’t have taste in fashion, but clothes were not our family’s priority.”  Basic necessities such as food, fare, and a little percentage of extra money for them were always on top of their list. Most of the time, extra money would not be included in their list anymore, because of their budget.

She said that “I had a lot of unforgettable moments during my childhood/high school days and these have been a great source of my inspiration up until now. Every time I look back from where we started, I still couldn’t believe that we have reached this far. I am very humbled with all the blessings and opportunities that we have received.”

In college, she was encouraged by her neighbor to apply for scholarship and indeed she became a scholar. She applied in the City College Scholarship Program (CSSCP) who also coordinated with Office of Scholarship and Financial Aid (OSFA).

College was a new world for her, she didn’t know where and how to belong. She had a hard time adjusting to the college environment. Nonetheless, she managed to get her rhythm back fast; she became the president of the Development Communication Society and a core member of the Inter-Religious and Cultural Dialogue of Xavier University.

As a scholar in college, the only challenge she was facing was to managing her time. She needed to manage all responsibilities at once; not to mention, being pressured in doing more in any organization that she was involved in.

She was a former student intern at the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) a non-governmental organization (NGO). The IRRI was established to develop new rice varieties and rice crop management techniques with finding sustainable ways to improve the well-being of poor rice farmers and consumers as well as the environment in mind.

The scholar’s name is Trinnah Marie Malinao Caracho and she graduated as a Cum Laude on March 2013.  She said that the scholarship was of great help to her and her family because the scholarship lessened their financial burden; the scholarship had given her family and her hope for a brighter tomorrow.

Their family has now improved. Like for the past 5 years her mother has been a biology teacher in the Xavier University High School (XUHS) and her younger brother is now a second year; he is also a full scholar taking up Marine Engineering in the University of Cebu – Norwegian Ship-owners Association (UC – NSA).

Her father right now is self-employed. He is a contractor of a mechanical driver and manages a little fishpond that he inherited from his family. He is also a habal=habal driver during weekends.

She ended the interview by giving out a short message to those who wish to apply for scholarship saying “Always remember the hardships and sacrifices that you and your loved ones went through to reach this far. Make those memories as your great source of inspiration to keep moving forward. You may receive a lot of rejection for scholarship grants but do not let this stop you from dreaming. Most of all, give back all the glory to God. You’ll definitely go far with Him backing you up.”

Poverty is not the hindrance to success.” A line that her mother had told her when she was still young. This statement…..This statement could be one of the factors that made Ms. Trinnah to become more determined in attaining her goals.

I used to complain about going to school. Like how it’s a pain in the neck to wake up 7:30 in the morning just to go to school or adjust your relaxing hours for school. Heck, I even made a mini motto in my mind saying “makadaot ang school sa laag.” Well, that’s how I used to be, until I heard this girl’s story.

Radio Monitoring

DAY 1

Name of Program: Boys Night Out

Station: 89.3

Timeslot: 6-10pm

Host: Sam YG, Tony Toni, and Slick Rick

The boys managed to have an interesting topic which was about religion. It was very interactive.  Once again, they related it to love. Like, they have this issue for 30 min on what would you choose? The person you love or your religion?  So, far I did not see any violations in the KBP as of this night.

DAY 2

Name of Program: Boys Night Out

Station: 89.3

Timeslot: 6-10pm

Host: Sam YG, Tony Toni, and Slick Rick

The boys had this topic about relationships with no label. Like, you go and hang out with each other, you know that you both have feelings for each other, yet there is no label. So, far the boys have violated article 25, article 20, and article 7. Where they have been a caller who shared some of her unusual sexual situation, but the boys encouraged her to tell more about it on air, rather than telling her that it’s not appropriate to tell that kind of things on air. It could portray the people that what the caller was doing is right and it would change the traditions and cultures we have here. Also, the boys have embarrassed and ridiculed a caller, because they got bored of his story. So, they shooed him on air, in a rude way.

DAY 3

Name of Program: Boys Night Out

Station: 89.3

Timeslot: 6-10pm

Host: Sam YG, Tony Toni, and Slick Rick

The boys once again violated the article 20. The boys invited someone who bible studies and ridiculed him on air. Like, he shouldn’t bible study at all and he should different stuff rather than bible study. They even intruded to his privacy by getting his diary or journal and read some of it on air.

DAY 4

Name of Program: Boys Night Out

Station: 89.3

Timeslot: 6-10pm

Host: Sam YG, Tony Toni, and Slick Rick

The boys this time invited someone, Lana Roi. She was introduced nicely, everything went well, until the boys once again managed to violate article 20. They interviewed Lana Roi on what she does and what she will be doing. Problem was that the boys always put double meanings with their lines. Like she told them that she was having a concert this coming August 20 and told the boys to come with her and have a good time. They boys ridiculed her in way by saying, that of course they will be there and they will surely have a ‘good time’. The guardian or mother of  Lana Roi was there and they even included her in their ridicules.

Poverty is not the hindrance to success (Draft)

Making change happen in different places. (week 6)

1. How does development communication contribute to a place like Tulugan, Barangay Songco, Lantapan, Bukidnon? Cite an example each using the five features of development communication purposive, persuasive, goal-directed, audience-oriented, and interventionist by nature. One paragraph each feature of at least five lines per paragraph.

We went to a very isolated place, located at Tulugan, Barangay Songco, Lantapan, Bukidnon. Simply our goal was to immerse ourselves with them, but who would knew that our other purpose, besides immersing ourselves with them was to help them give some of their basic needs, such as, giving school supplies to them and giving farming tools to our foster parents, which was a really big help to them. So, in the end we had a win-win situation, we were happy that we learned their ways and they were also happy that they received some supplies we donated that turned out to be pretty in their area.

We were able to persuade the people in Tulugan, Barangay Songco, Lantapan, Bukidnon. That even the city people are able to live with them in isolated places. My foster father told me that it’s good for our school to see what it’s like living in a poor life. Well, I think that I have convinced him that they are not poor, for they have this great view of nature, just outside of their house, which cannot be seen in the city. Also, I have told my foster father that they are not poor as long as they are complete and happy, because most of the families in the city are usually broken or not complete because of work.

We already had a goal when we arrived at Tulugan, Barangay Songco, Lantapan, Bukidnon, it is to learn their way of living and to preserve their culture. We went their already had our minds set that we must learn their cultures, such as to learn their dances, to learn about their religious beliefs, and to know what it’s like just being there.

We have also been so extra careful and sensitive on everything that we have been saying there, since, lots of people would listen to what we would say to them. I also have been careful with what words I would be using there since I would not want them to be offended on what I would say.

I also have been neutral at the Tulugan, Barangay Songco, Lantapan, Bukidnon, since again, I would not want to offend their ways. I have never commented on something that our bayi has been telling to us, since I would never want to offend her. Since she has her own beliefs and I have mine. But as we continue to listen to her stories, I have found a common part in her stories that were a bit familiar in my own beliefs.

2. What is wrong in Cagayan de Oro City? As a change agent, where do you can contribute the strongest? Use at least two features of development communication to discuss your answer. One paragraph each feature of at least five lines per paragraph.

What’s wrong with Cagayan de Oro City, is no just its political leaders, but also the people in it. The people in Cagayan de Oro City, continue to blame the political leaders on why our city’s situation is like this. Yes, they are somewhat responsible for what is happening to our city right now, but the people also is to be blamed for what is happening to our city. The perfect example for this was the Sendong tragedy, the Sendong tragedy killed a lot of people here in CDOC (Cagayan de Oro City) and people here blame our political leaders on why it happened. Well, yes they are to blame, but we are also to blame on why such tragedy happened. Earlier that day I already heard on the radio that there is a signal no. 2 storm about to land in CDOC that day, but people that day were so confident that nothing would happen. So when the storm hit CDOC and a lot was killed, what did most of the people do? They blamed the political leaders on why such tragedy happened. To sum it all up, the laws that are made in our country are great and they would help our country develop if only it was implemented in a good way. How would a country develop if it has such great laws, but the people would not follow such rules? Well that is where we enter.

We need to constantly persuade people here in our country to follow rules, so as that we would develop as a country. We should just not lay all day waiting for change to happen. We must be the change that we want to be. But before a person could persuade someone to change, we must also change ourselves to the better, else, we would become hypocrites. We need to convince people to start following such rules that would help our country develop and then a domino effect would follow.

The people who would persuade must also be a goal-oriented person; else they would get tired of persuading people to be better with no inspiration in their mind. They must have a vision on their minds on what he/she wants to happen in the future, that way they would be successful in persuading people to change for the better.
